A thesis statement is that statement that contains the focus of your essay and tells the reader what the essay will be about. A thesis statement usually comes at the introductory paragraph of a paper and usually provides the concise summary of the main points or claim of the essay. The thesis statement always determines the kind of paper you are writing. There are three kinds of papers: analytical, expository, and argumentative. The thesis statement will take different course for each of this kind of papers.

         STEP 1: RESEARCH

Before you could come up with a thesis statement, you first need to do research and get the basic or general information about the topic and ensure you understand it completely. Analyze the collected data and jot down the most important in a sheet, as you will need them to make a strong thesis statement. STEP 2: WRITE A DRAFT OF OUR THESIS STATEMENT

First, come up with different drafts and narrow your topic. For you to come up with the best thesis statement you need to observe the some guidelines

Simplicity: Make your thesis statement simple and do not burry it deep inside your essay that it becomes unnoticeable by the reader.

Answer a question: A strong thesis statement usually answers two questions; How? And Why? The simplest way of having the best thesis statement is to answer those two simple questions. What are you trying to prove with the essay?

Be specific: Thesis statements that are too vague often do not have a strong argument.

STEP 3: REFINE YOUR DRAFT

Check if your thesis statement answers or addresses the assignment. Investigate all the drafts you came up with and choose the best to your liking. Eliminate unnecessary words and do not make the thesis too long. Clarify your vague phrases and assertions. As you write your thesis statement, keep the rest of your paper in mind at all times. Do not kill your paper at the beginning with your essay. Try to refine your thesis statement to your best.

STEP 4: COMPLETE THE THESIS STATEMENT

As you write your thesis statement, remember that context matters. Try to relate your thesis with the instructor’s ideas and discussions. Take a stand with your essay and make it clear but do not make it be elusive. Follow certain rigid structures when writing a good essay. Knowing the basic formula will help you know how your entire argument should be organized. Your essay should contain two important things; a topic or a subject matter and a brief summary of what you will say.

EXAMPLE OF A THESIS STATEMENT

BAD THESIS STATEMENT: While both sides fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery, the North fought for moral reasons while the South fought to preserve its own institutions.
